Agency of the Year AwardHorry County Parks and Recreation Department is pleased to announce that it was awarded the 2011 South Carolina Parks and Recreation Association Agency of the Year Award at its State Convention Sept. 12, 2011. The award is based on agency accomplishments in advancing recreation services in facility improvements, implementation of programs, professional development and department operations.
The Horry County Parks and Recreation Department expresses its gratitude to County Council for allocating the resources to fund the advancement. The Department appreciates the support of the County’s Senior Management team, Administrator John Weaver, Assistant County Administrators Steve Gosnell, Anne Wright and Paul Whitten. Horry County Parks and Recreation Department is grateful for all the support the other county departments gave to contribute to this recognition.
We also want to convey a special thanks to all the volunteers, coaches, boards, commissions and supporters of our programs, for without you we wouldn’t be able to serve the people of Horry County.

New Facilities
The Carolina Forest and South Strand Recreation Centers are now open!
Both Recreation Centers are approximately 21,000 sq. feet each and include a gymnasium with a walking track, two multipurpose meeting rooms, and an exercise room. The open lobby will provide ample space to have games and a rock climbing wall. The facilities includes locker rooms and a kitchen. The Carolina Forest Recreation Center will also feature a rain garden in one of the two stormwater ponds, which will be coordinated with the Horry County Stormwater Department.
The Carolina Forest Recreation Center, Library and Palmetto Adventure Land Playground facilities are located on Carolina Forest Boulevard.
The South Strand Recreation Center is located on Scipio Lane, just off of Holmestown Road, and will feature multipurpose and baseball fields.
